The life in the city changes quicker than its structures; the city always falls behind our expectations. This article describes public space from the designer’s perspective, also in the context of designs that were and will be. The author treats public space as a space of culture where opposing views, attitudes, ideas, longings and dreams collide. To this aim, several characteristic examples of thinking about the city over the past 100 years are presented, along with considerations about the appearance of cities in the future – most probably both the return to the traditional form of public space and completely different visions of life in the city will come about. Public space should be treated as an area of culture where the future is modelled and discussed. It should be a permanent space of exchange of information and social communication, training ground of new solutions, meeting point, and not only an area of political and commercial entertainment.
