Many have shown how inequality can be coded into virtual worlds, and gaming culture in particular has been criticised for upholding sexism and heterosexuality through game design. This article reflects on how videogame design can support the creative construction of gender identity. The analysis of how the game The Sims has been appropriated by the queer community and of its development reveals the potential of the integration between “sandbox” design and the practice of “modding” to overcome the current limitations in the game’s design approach. The authors finalise by speculating further transformation in metadesign of systems for promoting the transgression of hegemonic discourse.
