This article explains the notion of public space and social consultations through the prism of several authors, inter alia Łukasz Rosiak, Katarzyna Asanowicz and Jan Gehl. Based on executed designs of Towarzystwo Projektowe [Design Association] such as: urban wayfinding systems for Warsaw, Bielsko-Biała and Kraków, as well as urban furniture for Warsaw, the author presents various ways of conducting social consultations. The works implemented by Towarzystwo Projektowe since 1996 show the authorities’ and residents’ changing attitude to participation in projects regarding urban space. They also show that – despite the ready procedures developed over this time and the increasing social awareness in reference to the meaning of public space and the willingness of co-deciding about its shape – participation cannot replace sociological research or expert knowledge.
