1 Innovation and Experiment as Stimulants (?) of Industrial Design in the People’s Republic of Poland
The economic situation of the People’s Republic of Poland, which was unfavourable to experimenting in the field of improving manufacturing processes and products, did not completely inhibit the development of research institutions employing designers attempting to implement innovative solutions. Activities of this type were usually carried out within three independent sectors: a) in institutions established by the government (mainly in the laboratories of the Institute of Industrial Design); b) in higher education (at the Academies of Fine Arts, State Higher Schools of Fine Arts, as well as at individual polytechnic universities), and c) in experimental facilities existing directly at production plants. This article attempts to present the mechanisms that conditioned the work of designers who were professionally active in the years 1952–1989, focusing on examples currently considered as outstanding achievements of Polish design of that period.
