6 Inaccessible Accessibility?

Technological development caused the virtual world to become our parallel reality and so it is important to consider the online rights of people with disabilities as equally obvious as those in the material world. The so-far experience proves that digital accessibility supports all groups of users – not only those with disabilities.

The legal obligation of respecting the WCAG 2.1 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) by web pages and mobile applications of public institutions is still met too rarely. Also among designers, the aspect of accessibility is frequently marginalised and neglected. It is probably caused by the difficulty in understanding the specialist language of the WCAG regulations.

As the law on digital accessibility already refers to public institutions, and will soon expand to the public sector as well – designers must be familiar with the WCAG indications just as architects know the construction law. Respecting these rules by web designers will be of considerable impact on the increase of digital inclusiveness.
