The article refers to the influence certain characteristics and behaviours attributed to designers educated at artistic academies in the artist paradigm have on their teamwork skills. Such traits as independence, nonconformity, egocentrism, risk-taking, commonly considered as destructive in relation to teamwork, are presented as beneficial to the efficiency and results achieved in the group operations. Working in a large team does not need to mean anonymity, compromises, sacrifice and giving up one’s own ambition. It can be an experience filled with positive emotions and satisfaction of executing most challenging designs, difficult to tackle individually. These considerations are based on the author’s 25 years of experience in managing design teams, his conversations with studio leaders and the analysis of publications on the subject.
