2 The Importance of Life Cycle Assessment in Product Development to Business and Design Teams

Life cycle assessment (LCA) based on life cycle thinking (LCT) becomes the crucial tool of supporting business and design decisions, especially under the conditions of growing EU regulatory requirements, excessive use of resources, and waste generation. It enables a complex analysis of impact of products, services and processes on the environment – including emissions and use of resources among other things. It supports development of more effective and sustainable solutions. Although LCA can be used globally, in business practice it refers mostly to EU realities and European regulatory environment.

The article explains the terms LCT and LCA, their importance to business and work of design teams. It describes individual stages of product life cycle and system boundaries, including the variants: cradle-to-grave, cradle-to-gate, gate-to-gate, and cradle-to-cradle.

It offers recommendations regarding implementation of LCA practices in enterprises, and discusses linking LCA with digital product passport (DPP) and environmental product declaration (EPD).

The article presents comparisons of different fragments of LCAs – examples of its practical application from design and business perspective. The analyses were conducted by the author’s design studio. In parallel, it indicates and details the more ambiguous LCA results, which might be counter-intuitive. There is also focus on the area of material selection, including difficulties with comparing the existing LCA results.
