7 The Colourful Side of Bauhaus


The didactic of colour design often remains underappreciated in the industrial design schools and the decisions regarding colour selection are largely based on the experience in the area of art, while in the revolutionary programme of Bauhaus – the fundamental reference point for the majority of design academies – the colour theory and practice constituted an essential pillar of education. The activity of this school involved the most renown 20th-century colour theorists: Johannes Itten and Josef Albers. In parallel to the studios of wood, metal, glass and ceramics, there functioned the studio of colour (farbe). The students’ designs in the scope of colour scheme were a considerable source of profit for school. This article attempts to present theoretical as well as practical aspects of Bauhaus’ course as regards colour, along with its evolution over the 14 years of school’s existence.
