Contemporary city is a multispecies habitat, which does not mean that all beings are equal here. Growing awareness of the beneficial influence of contact with nature on a human, as well as knowledge about consequences of climate disaster, such as heat islands and floods, which can be limited by maintaining environmental balance in cities, cause urban nature to be treated in categories broader than recreation or decoration. Still, many species living in cities are situated between civilisation and nature, perceived at best as a nuisance, and at worst – as pests that should be exterminated. The article reviews contexts and strategies of urban policies regarding pigeons and what design form they assume. On the examples of speculative design and small architecture and “urban acupuncture”, it drafts design answers to the question of how we can peacefully co-exist with the often troublesome animal neighbours.
