1 In Defence of Imagination – How Do We Benefit from Fiction? On Design Fiction and Speculative Design
The article presents the context of development and significance of critical design, speculative design, and design fiction in reference to contemporary art-and-design education. Analysing the map of discipline proposed by Elliott P. Montgomery and Caoimhe Isha Beaulé, as well as Voros’ Futures Cone, the author demonstrates that design spreads between the poles of experiment and structure, with the central competence of imagination as a tool of critical reflection.
Against this background, she presents the original method of Applied Science Fiction, which combines design fiction, art, and didactics in order to develop abilities of designing narrative prototypes of the future. The article is also an attempt at translating these methods and phenomena into the Polish language, introducing concepts previously absent from the local discourse. For this purpose, a glossary of key terms (PL/ENG) and original illustrations made by the designers behind discussed projects have been attached.
In the case study part, the author presents her and students’ selected designs, which expand the borders of traditional design and initiate a debate about possible future scenarios – from adaptation of the body and human relations with technology, to ecocritical visions of the post-Anthropocene world. The article proves that the critical movement in design is not limited to criticism, but also serves as an active factor of change – a catalyst of new ways of thinking and operation in design and artistic education.
