6 Dust to Dust. Clothing Design According to Yuima Nakazato

Yuima Nakazato is a Japanese clothing designer, who, despite presenting his collections within the Paris haute couture shows, that is the centre of the fashion design world, remains on its outskirts. He does not design clothes to mass sell them in brand shops, but to search for new solutions. Mainly technological ones. The conceptions he offers are more than theoretical practice. The insight into his creative process was provided, at least partially, by the museum exhibition organised in 2024 by Cité de la dentelle et de la mode in the French Calais. There, one could take a close look at the Japanese designer’s clothes made of his original modules, textiles produced by means of the patented method of biosmocking or impressive ideas for upcycling. Last year, Polish audience had a chance (during the MDAG Festival) to watch a documentary titled Dust to Dust (directed by Kosai Sekine), which thoroughly followed the design process of Nakazato and his team. One of its crucial elements was the designer’s journey to Kenya to see the notorious clothing dumps with his own eyes. Confronted with the fact, which is ignored by many, the Japanese designer took some of these “clothes-garbage” to recycle them into new clothes. While on this task, he neither criticised the clothing industry nor commented on the infamous phenomenon, nor ironised. He searched for authentic solutions and applied them in the scale available to his company.
