1 Design vs More-than-human Scale and Complexity

The article analyses design practice as operations under conditions of radical system complexity. Every artefact remains an element of extensive networks of global and transspecies connections at any stage of its existence.

In reference to the conception of wicked problems and Morton’s hyperobjects and factoids, the author offers to approach design as a practice entangled in processes beyond the perceptual and cognitive capabilities of human beings. Within this perspective, ethical evaluation or sozological thinking faces structural barriers: dispersion of accountability in designer-users relationships, opacity of data and ecological indicators, and tension between sustainable design and the logic of late-capitalism market innovation. In these contexts, the case study of the global network of promotion, production and distribution of Apple smartphones demonstrates the scale of perceptual and axiological challenge faced by every individual functioning on consumer markets today.

The term “wicked problems” is related to the lack of “benefits, profits proportional to the effort made”, as well as the lack of grace and their discouraging unsightliness. The author argues that responsible design requires not only material optimisation, but also effort and humility towards the results of design – as well as redefining accountability in the world of hyperconnections.
