6 Critical Design vs. Market Reality: A Graduate’s Perspective, Fresh from Design Academy

Design circles have been discussing the necessary change of paradigm for years. As demonstrated by the report: System-shifting Design, instead of focussing on improving the existing system, it is possible to become a facilitator of a fundamental change, originating from alternative world views. Such an attitude comes with challenges as well. In the project Who Can Afford to Be Critical, Afonso Matos wittingly concludes: “I tried to subvert capitalism with my design practice. Now I’m looking for a job.”

From the perspective of a fresh graduate, the article focuses on economic realities of design profession. According to the report published by Indeed, the average number of job offers for the position of UX Designer decreased in 2023 four times in relation to 2022, and constituted 70% of job offers in 2021. How can socially engaged designers deal with the labour market crisis, and not lose the spark of critical operation? The article draws attention to the dilemma of remaining professional designers or changing how we make the living.

It raises the necessity of designers’ collective action to stay active in the conditions of limited resources. In this context, the article analyses values, which Silvio Lorusso attributes to culture of contribution: collectivism, anonymity, open information flow, positive influence on local communities, and provides examples of design operations, springing from similar motivations.

Keywords: critical design, market, social effect of design, open source, ethical shift
