This article refers to the possibilities of conducting research of fashion, so that this multidimensional phenomenon is most completely described. Until now, one of the many disciplines through the prism of which fashion has been observed is art, treated as the opportunity to emancipate fashion and ensure its presence in art galleries. The author indicates problems connected with such a way of thinking and suggests to consider clothing mainly in the categories of design, rather than art. In parallel, he analyses issues which arise with the so-formulated methodology of fashion studies.
